Let the games begin: Persona 4

With term well under way, time to sort out what games I should study for the assignment of one of my units.  I've tried to ensure that each game covers a whole range of experience in the gaming genre, from platform, location, genre, popularity, audience, intensity and control.  First up to consider is Persona 4 covering PS2, far east, RPG, quirky, critic favourite, niche and hardcore

Persona 4 - PS2
I like a good jrpg from time to time but they do tend to get rather samey.  Spiky haired courageous youth gathers friends together to take on a monstrous evil in a fantasy/steampunk setting, with fighting represented as a choice from a selection of abilities usually focused around magic or swords.  Okay maybe that's a little harsh (although I have described the rough plot of most of the Final Fantasy back catalogue) but it does fit the mould of most jrpgs.

Persona from all the good things I've heard about does seem to suggest a different kind of model.  Yes there seems to be the usual battles but it comes with personal interaction with the characters of the setting, trying to delve deeper into what makes them tick and merging that into the combat mechanisms.

Socialisation and combat wrapped together sounds right up my street.  With my PS2 returning to full operational status tomorrow looks like I'm going to lose some significant time to this.  All the name of research, of course.....
